Designed to be part of the next generation of video encoding, and to improve upon the existing formats currently available. But as it stands, why do we need newer and better codecs and encoding software?</p><p><br></p><p>Video encoding involves converting digital video from one format to another, both audio and video data is taken, compressed, sent through the internet and then decoded into a viewable format. Without encoding, image everyone trying to constantly stream massive amounts of raw video data every time they’re watching a stream or video online, the congestion would grind services to a halt. Encodings overall purpose is to establish an efficient and compatible method of suits the needs of a wide variety of applications and hardware such as Streaming, Mobile, DVD, and video editing.</p><p><br></p><p>With many video formats available in the wild sprawls of the wide web, encoding is exceptionally important to narrow these options down. Of course, we also need to consider the fact that different codecs are going to handle compression and decompression at different values, offering different qualities as needed for different applications. For example, if you want a high quality such as 1440p live stream, you may use Nvidia’s NVENC encoder, designed specifically for efficient encoding whilst livestreaming.</p><p><br></p><p><strong><br data-mce-bogus='1'></strong></p><p><strong>AV1 is coming to the masses… Soon?</strong></p><p><br></p><p>Of course new forms of encoding come with a caveat, and that is that sites and software need to be able to de-code the data to use it. This is where AV1’s major hangup currently lies, despite being supported by new CPUs and GPUs such as the Intel ARC series and AMD Radeon GPUs. Currently, there aren’t many services capable of receiving AV1 encoded video, especially live streamed, and only a handful major platforms that accept non-streamed videos encoded via AV1 such as YouTube.</p><p><br></p><p>AV1 looks to be a viable future alternative to the current commonly used codecs such as NVENC and H.264. It aims to improve upon these existing formats across the board with improved efficiency, speed, and compression without sacrificing quality. As the technology becomes more prevalent and supported, we may possibly see AV1 as the standard format for 4K live streams on sites such as Twitch and YouTube Live in the near future.
