While today they are most known for the MechWarrior series of tactical multiplayer games, they actually started out in the world of board games. Mech-based combat, in some form or another, has been the trademark of the franchise, and many of the titles they have produced over the years are now considered classics in their respective genres.

Mechwarrior 5 was hotly anticipated but despite its solid mechanics, incredible graphics, and atmospheric gameplay, certain issues plagued it, holding it back from being a truly standout title.

A new patch, Kestrel Lancers, might be poised to correct some of the more pressing issues with the game while giving it some additional content that is sure to spark the interest of fans of the BattleTech universe. Let’s take a closer look at some of the things MechWarrior already has going for it, and what the patch is focused on improving upon. In case you are ready to start playing now but lack the necessary rig to do so, we’ll also provide some helpful info at the end regarding how to finance your gaming PC with CLX.

What the Original MechWarrior 5 Did Right

The format is simple: multiplayer combat in giant mechs. Like its predecessors, MechWarrior 5 capitalizes on this tried and true format, even improving upon it in certain areas.

Where these titles differ from your typical FPS shooter is in the pace and skill set involved with each match. Bucking the trend of lightning fast action that you see in games like Apex Legends or Call of Duty, MechWarrior is about making strategic plays based on your team and the current payload of the mech you are operating.

The hallmark of the series is in managing your mechs and how you work with them on the battlefield. Do you prioritize armor over weapon capacity? Do you rely on missiles and cannons that pack a punch yet have limited ammunition, or do you go with energy weapons that have unlimited shots but must be carefully monitored in order to avoid overheating?

So on top of battling the opponents in the MechWarrior series, you are also constantly fighting with your own mech, in a sense. To operate at peak efficiency and be lethal on the battlefield, you have to know your payload, and understand what you can get away with before your mech risks shutting down due to overheating. This means outfitting your mechs with the right weapons that align with your strategy and gameplay preferences.

Clearly, such a system makes for a rather robust array of different strategies and approaches that you can take in the game based on what you feel comfortable with and what a specific mission might require of you.

With updated graphics and plenty of mech action to salivate over, MechWarrior 5 at least had this much going for it right out of the box. However, most gamers and fans of the series would agree that there was plenty of room for improvement.

Where MechWarrior 5 Fell Short

One of the biggest complaints about the original MechWarrior 5 was that the friendly AI was not exactly winning any intelligence awards. In fact, the actions taken by your AI companions on the battlefield could actually make your life more difficult rather than help you accomplish a mission.

Fans also noted that the story was thin and the voice acting left a lot to be desired. While these games have not focused on rich story elements for quite some time, BattleTech fans know that the universe has a ton of content to work with, so there’s no excuse for a weak story. When it comes to creating a believable atmosphere for the backdrop of a warzone, it only makes sense that a solid story would fill this need. The original story content of MechWarrior 5 was not on par with expectations.

One other complaint fans levied at the original title was that it lacked a bit of combat variety. Despite the assortment of weapons at your disposal, the combat often felt shallow, especially when compared to past titles in the series.

What Are We Getting With Kestrel Lancers?

While none of these issues were enough to render the game unplayable by any means, it was clear that in order to live up to the BattleTech name, some changes would need to be made sooner or later. At long last, the Kestrel Lancers DLC has arrived, and with it a variety of important changes.

One of the many new additions Kestrel Lancers boasts is a somewhat refreshed friendly AI system. Given how important strategy is to the overall gameplay, it was difficult to square in this fact with the sometimes blundering AI teammates. Of course, this issue was mitigated completely when playing with friends, but if you wanted to tackle the campaigns on your own, you pretty much had to babysit the AI.

This new system actually allows you to take command of any of the mechs in your lance on the fly, as well, potentially preventing various mishaps. So on top of better performing AI, the player ultimately has more control over what their teammates do in the heat of battle, which makes the game more fun and enjoyable overall.

Here are a few of the other key changes coming with the Kestrel Lancers DLC for MechWarrior 5:

Large-scale combat. The DLC includes battle scenarios that really aim to make the player feel as though they are in the middle of an expansive war zone. The expansion includes brand new cities that are far bigger and more urban than what was included in the original game.

The actual DLC campaign focuses heavily on story, which is a departure from the format of the base game. For anyone who loves BattleTech lore, the DLC delivers.

New areas or maps to explore. These added biomes include a desert and jungle, providing a completely different feel for the game.

Melee combat. Instead of only relying on your guns, mechwarriors will now be able to slug it out when in close quarters combat. This adds an entirely new dimension to the gameplay, as punching does not cause your mech to heat up nor does it spend ammo.

These updates and changes are already being well-received by the community, so if you are a BattleTech fan or simply like the prospect of battling in giant armored robots, you won’t want to miss this PC gem.

"},{"id":"img1","sort_index":1,"type":"image","content":"clx-gaming-pc.jpg","alt":"CLX Gaming PC"},{"id":"p2","sort_index":2,"type":"paragraph","content":"

Experience MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries At It’s Best

Even though MechWarrior 5 is a couple of years old at this point, it’s not a game that’s light on PC resources by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, on Steam, the game’s recommended system requirements include something in the ballpark of an Intel Core i7-6700Kor AMD Ryzen 7 1700 CPU, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, and about 16 GB of RAM.

While the game doesn’t sport quite as much detail and fast-paced action as some of the newer dedicated FPS multiplayer titles we’ve seen in recent years, it’s still a rather demanding game. If you are thinking about grabbing the expansion or jumping into the Battletech universe for the very first time, you are going to want to invest in a high-performance gaming PC that can keep up.

Here at CLX, we make it as easy as possible to build your dream machine, with generous financing for gaming PCs that are sure to fit most budgets.
