We knew we had to give the game a try, but we had to put together something special for this title.

We went for a small form factor portable gaming PC so we could take it with us without a problem and still deliver the power (and looks) this game deserves. Of course, we aimed for the recommended system requirements, and we were a bit shocked by the game´s drive space stipulation: a massive 150GB (now 80GB) available space required. I think only Microsoft Flight Simulator is that hungry, but I could be wrong.

Since Nvidia promised that the game would throw everything and the kitchen sink at players in terms of graphics, we decided to play it safe and crank the GPU power up with an RTX 3070 for good measure, and our signature Quench Closed Loop CPU Liquid Cooling to make sure performance was never an issue.

Now, let's talk about the actual game. In an era where buying games as soon as they come out of the oven is considered a risky gamble, Guardians of The Galaxy sets a shining example of how games are supposed to look and play when people pay full price for them.

This title looks very polished and bugs are close to nonexistent. We read reports of some glitches associated with Xbox controllers, but we never experienced any. What we experienced was a fun and colorful good-natured and wholesome Marvel story, chock full of jokes and easter eggs for those who are familiar with both the MCU and the comic book lore.

It took us some time to get used to the new aesthetics and the unfamiliar voice acting. As fans of the movie franchise, we were kind of bummed out by the absence of Pratt, Bautista, Saldana, and Cooper. Their iconic voices have been too long with us to be replaced so easily, sorry.

HOWEVER, and it is a big “however”, the voice acting in this game is top-notch. And I´m not just saying that. The dialogues never feel out of place, and all of the jokes land. Even Groot manages to insert clever “I am Groot” remarks here and there. Eidos Montreal did their homework and brought us a game that can be considered a sequel to the movies without a problem in terms of story.

In the graphics department, Guardians Of The Galaxy looks amazing. It is not an open-world title so you don't have much time to look too hard into certain details before the game railroads you at a frantic pace.

We were able to push it to 120fps without any drops even during combat-heavy scenes. So the game proved to be very stable even when we cranked settings up to 4k with ray-tracing turned on. Nvidia´s exclusive Deep Learning Super Sampling helped absorb the performance hit of ray tracing like a charm, and we could see all the promised opaque reflections on all kinds of surfaces without any noticeable fps drop.

The scenarios of this title all look incredible with color palettes taken right off Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

Guardians of The Galaxy is a single-player campaign game that, unlike other superhero titles, puts you in the shoes of the least powerful or skilled member of a mismatched band of galactic misfits. The game starts off real slow, with Star-Lord wielding a pair of mini pistols that do not do much harm. But as the game progresses, you and your team grow in power and abilities that can help you solve clever environmental puzzles and wipe out hordes of beasties and baddies. Combat is easy and straightforward: you shoot enemies and ask your teammates to stop whatever they are doing and deliver a special attack that stuns your enemies for a short period. They have different effects and cooldowns, and are fun to watch, especially when you sequence them in a chain of perfectly timed finishing moves. But the rest of the Guardians do a lot more than just come along and give you a hand here and there. Their personalities are incredibly fleshed out and they NEVER stop talking. It felt like a full 15 hours James Gunn movie, with incredible dialogues that will have you giggling all the way through the story.

Level design and animations help keep the immersion during the game, and the soundtrack is absolutely on point. It can be described as a fun combination of an impeccable original score, with constant needle dropping from the 80s throughout the game.

Peter Quill, the hero of this adventure, has a weirdly endearing character arc that revolves around him becoming a more competent leader. What's interesting is that his evolution ties in perfectly with his combat abilities. To put it bluntly, Star-Lord severely lacks firepower. You get to control the weakest character in the whole game, and that quickly made us realize that our role was to find ways to efficiently exploit our team´s abilities for maximum damage during battles. We command the actions of the team for fully synchronized pain deliverance that requires some tactical and situational reasoning to get right. Even non-combat situations gave us opportunities to figure out ways to combine your team's abilities to solve puzzles and keep moving forward, and that feels extremely satisfying.

In short, we had a fun weekend putting together a portable gaming PC rig in order to enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy the way the devs intended it.
